ADI Part 1 mock test: what free practice can and cannot do
Our free tool is a 25-question diagnostic scored with the same ratios as the real pass rule. It is not a full 100-question mock test. Here is what the real test involves and the practice route the GOV.UK guidance names.
What a full mock would have to match
- These rules apply in Great Britain. The ADI part 1 test works differently in Northern Ireland. [1]
- The real multiple-choice part is 100 questions in 1 hour and 30 minutes. [1]
- There are 25 questions in each of 4 categories: road procedure; traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge; driving test, disabilities, and the law; and publications and instructional techniques. [1]
- To pass, you need at least 85 out of 100 overall and at least 20 out of 25 in each of the 4 categories. [1]
- The hazard perception part is 14 video clips with a pass mark of 57 out of 75, and you must pass both parts in the same test. [1]
The practice route GOV.UK names
- You can use books and software to revise for the theory test. [1]
- You can study using the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency theory test kit for approved driving instructors e-Learning. [1]
- For hazard perception, the guidance says to buy the DVSA theory test kit for approved driving instructors e-Learning to learn the skills and then test them. It is a paid product, not a free one. [1]
- On the day, you get the chance to do a practice question before the test starts, to get used to the screens. [1]
Why the 20 out of 25 rule matters for practice
- You fail if you score 85 or higher overall but do not score high enough in each of the 4 categories, so practice scores are most useful broken down by category. [1]
