What to take to your ADI Part 1 test
Take the right driving licence to ADI Part 1. If you do not, your test is cancelled and you do not get your money back.
Your driving licence
- These rules apply in Great Britain. The ADI part 1 test works differently in Northern Ireland. [1]
- You must take your UK photocard driving licence to your test. [1]
- If you have a licence from Northern Ireland, bring the photocard and paper counterpart licence. [1]
- If you have a paper licence, bring a valid passport as well. If you do not have a passport, you need to get a photocard licence. [1]
- Your test will be cancelled and you will not get your money back if you do not take the right things with you. [1]
Name changes and lost licences
- If you changed your name after booking, bring proof of the name change, for example a marriage certificate or deed poll. [1]
- If you do not have proof, you must cancel your test and book a new one in your new name using your new driving licence number. [1]
- If you lose your licence you need to apply for a replacement, which could take up to 15 days to arrive. Rearrange your test if you do not get it in time. [1]
Arriving and your belongings
- You must arrive 15 minutes before your test starts. If you are late, it will be cancelled, you lose your money and you have to book another test. [1]
- There is no waiting area at the test centre for any adults or children who come with you. [1]
- You must turn off all electronic devices, including mobile phones, smart watches and fitness trackers, before you enter. You will not be allowed to take your test if you bring a device you cannot turn off. [1]
- Personal items go in a locker, including bags, coats, hats, earphones, phones, watches, wallets, books, pens and anything in your pockets. Do not bring large bags. If there are no lockers, you are given a clear plastic box that is kept in a safe place. [1]
- You can only take personal belongings into the test room if they were approved when you booked your test. [1]
- A monitoring device for a medical condition is allowed only if it was approved when you booked. If you did not tell DVSA, cancel and rebook with support selected; you get a full refund if you give at least 3 clear working days' notice. [1]
Identity and security checks
- Staff need to see your face to check you are the person in your photo ID. If you wear headgear for religious or cultural reasons, you will need to remove it, and you will be allowed to do this in a private area with a female member of staff where possible. [1]
- Staff check for anything that could be used to cheat. They will not touch you, but will ask you to empty your pockets, roll up your sleeves, pat yourself down, show the top of your socks, stay still for a handheld metal detector and show your ears. You will not be allowed to take your test if you refuse the check. [1]
